Teach at South Lake Art League

Thank you for your interest in teaching at South Lake Art League. We welcome artists and creative professionals who are passionate about sharing their skills, encouraging creativity, and inspiring others through art education.

SLAL classes should focus on developing artistic skills and creative techniques. We welcome classes in fine art and fine craft disciplines that provide students with meaningful instruction and hands-on learning.

Successful class proposals should:

  • Teach a specific artistic skill or creative technique.
  • Help students build or expand their artistic abilities.
  • Be instructional rather than primarily entertainment-based.
  • Align with SLAL’s mission of supporting arts education and lifelong art learning.

Examples may include painting, drawing, watercolor, printmaking, ceramics, jewelry-making, fiber arts, book arts, photography, mixed media, calligraphy, and other fine art or fine craft disciplines.

Projects that are primarily novelty crafts, trend-based activities, or make-and-take projects without a significant instructional component may not be approved.

Instructor Application Information & Guidelines

Instructor Eligibility

To teach at South Lake Art League, instructors must:

  • Be a current South Lake Art League member in good standing
  • Demonstrate experience and proficiency in their chosen medium
  • Submit a completed Instructor Application and Class Proposal
  • Agree to abide by all South Lake Art League policies and procedures
  • Attend a New Instructor Orientation and Training Session, if applicable
  • Sign the South Lake Art League Instructor Agreement

Approval to teach is granted at the discretion of South Lake Art League based on program needs, scheduling availability, instructor qualifications, and alignment with the League’s mission.

Approval of one class proposal does not guarantee approval of future classes or preferred scheduling requests.

How to Become an Instructor

Step 1: Become a Member

All instructors must maintain an active South Lake Art League membership and remain in good standing throughout the time they are teaching.

Step 2: Submit an Instructor Application

Anyone wishing to teach at SLAL must complete the Instructor Application and Class Proposal, which includes:

  • Contact information
  • Class description and objectives
  • Materials list
  • Artist biography
  • Teaching statement

Step 3: Application Review

Applications are reviewed by South Lake Art League Board of Directors. Review criteria may include:

  • Quality and educational value of the proposed class
  • Instructor experience and qualifications
  • Community interest
  • Facility availability
  • Program balance and scheduling needs

Applicants may be contacted for additional information if needed. The Board of Directors will review your proposal and respond within 7 days. 

What Happens Next

Book your Class Date/Time

Once your proposal has been approved, you’ll receive:

    • A link to the class calendar to find available dates.
    • A link to the Instructor Facility Rental Payment page to pay for and book your dates

You may pay for and book class dates up to three months in advance, giving both you and SLAL plenty of time to promote your class and maximize enrollment.

Confirmation & Calendar Listing

After your payment has been received, we will add your class to our calendar page, at which time we may reach out to you for any registration links or additional information you’d like to include on your listing.

Your calendar listing will include:

  • Class name
  • Date
  • Time
  • Location (SLAL)
  • Instructor name
  • Class description
  • Class price
  • Registration link

Your class description will be pulled directly from your proposal, so please review it carefully before submitting.

Instructor Agreement and Orientation

Before teaching, instructors are required to review and electronically sign the Instructor Agreement and Orientation Packet. This packet outlines our policies, procedures, and expectations to help ensure a safe, professional, and enjoyable experience for everyone. It includes information on:

  • Facility access and procedures
  • Classroom expectations
  • Cleanup responsibilities
  • Closing procedures

  • Safety and operational guidelines

An in-person orientation may also be scheduled.

Important Information and Policies

Facility Rental Fee

South Lake Art League operates on a facility rental model. The Facility Rental Fee is paid at the time of booking. Instructors retain 100% of their class revenue and are responsible for collecting student payments directly. 

Classroom reservations are not confirmed until:

  • The rental fee has been paid
  • The requested date and time have been approved

Rental Fees

  • $22 for up to three (3) hours of facility use
  • The three-hour reservation includes setup, instruction time, and cleanup/breakdown
  • Additional time is charged at $10 per hour
  • Any portion of an additional hour will be billed as a full hour
  • A valid credit card must be maintained on file for additional time charges

Instructor Insurance

South Lake Art League recommends that instructors maintain their own general liability insurance appropriate for the classes they teach. While insurance is not currently required, instructors are responsible for their own business operations, supplies, materials, and activities conducted as part of their classes. Instructors are encouraged to consult with their insurance provider to determine the coverage that best meets their individual needs.

Registration and Student Payments

Instructors are responsible for:

  • Setting their own class prices
  • Managing registrations
  • Collecting student payments
  • Communicating with students
  • Handling class-specific questions

South Lake Art League does not collect tuition or registration fees on behalf of instructors.

Instructor Supplies and Storage

Instructors are responsible for providing all materials and equipment needed for their classes. This includes, but is not limited to, art supplies, paints, brushes, pencils, markers, paper, water containers, scissors, tape, easels, table coverings, aprons, extension cords, cleaning supplies, and any other materials required for instruction.

Paper towels, cleaning supplies, and toilet paper provided by South Lake Art League are intended for general facility use only and may not be used as classroom supplies.

The Gallery does not provide storage for instructor materials or equipment. All supplies, teaching materials, and artwork must be transported to and from the Gallery at the beginning and end of each class. Artwork or supplies may not be left overnight unless prior arrangements have been approved by the South Lake Art League.

Marketing Support

South Lake Art League supports instructors by helping promote approved classes through available marketing channels, which may include:

  • League website and calendar listings
  • Social media promotion
  • Email communications
  • Printed materials and community outreach when available

While the League provides promotional support, instructors are encouraged to actively market their classes through their own websites, social media channels, newsletters, and community networks.

Facility Responsibilities

Instructors are responsible for the classroom and facility during their scheduled reservation. The facility must be left in the same or better condition than it was found.

Instructors may be held financially responsible for damage caused by themselves, their assistants, guests, or students beyond normal wear and tear.

Class Cancellations

Instructors are responsible for notifying students and South Lake Art League promptly of any class cancellation or schedule change.

Failure to provide proper notification may result in suspension or revocation of teaching privileges.

If a class is cancelled, the instructor may request either:

  • A refund of the rental fee
  • A credit toward a future class reservation

Reservations canceled within three (3) days of the scheduled class date are not eligible for a refund of the reservation fee.

Lost and Found

South Lake Art League is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property. Items found in the Gallery will be placed in a lost and found box for seven (7) days. If an item is not claimed within that time, it may be discarded or donated, as appropriate.

Professional Conduct

As an instructor, you represent South Lake Art League while teaching in our Gallery. Instructors are expected to conduct themselves in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner and to help foster a welcoming, inclusive, and positive learning environment for all participants.

Instructors are responsible for treating students, members, volunteers, visitors, and fellow instructors with respect, maintaining a clean and safe classroom, and following all South Lake Art League policies and procedures. Professionalism includes arriving prepared, communicating clearly with students, and demonstrating consideration for shared Gallery spaces and resources.

Failure to uphold these standards of professional conduct may result in the suspension or revocation of teaching privileges.
