The South Lake Art League is updating its Make It Rain Art mural in the Downtown Clermont Art District Art Walk, and we’re inviting artists to submit their ideas for the next installation.

Located across from Roasted Spirit, in the Art District alley connecting W. Montrose Street and W. Minneola Street, this interactive mural features a real umbrella permanently mounted to the wall—and now it’s ready for a fresh artistic vision.

Make It Rain Art!

Make It Rain Art invites artists to reimagine this wall by creating an original work of art that interacts with the existing umbrella, which is a permanent fixture and will remain in place.

Think beyond simply painting a background—the umbrella should become part of the idea. What could be falling, pouring, splashing, floating, bursting, or otherwise interacting with it? Artists are encouraged to use their imagination, bold shapes, unexpected color, and a strong visual concept that can be appreciated from a distance.

Creative approaches beyond traditional paint are also welcome. Projected light and other non-obstructive media may be incorporated into the concept, provided they do not interfere with the umbrella, walkway, or use of the surrounding space.

The goal is to create something colorful, imaginative, engaging, and uniquely designed around the umbrella.

There is no fee to submit. This is an unpaid public art opportunity; no artist stipend or monetary award will be provided.

Who Can Apply

This call for art is open to artists who reside full-time in Lake County, Florida, with preference given to artists residing in South Lake County and to South Lake Art League members.

No mural experience is necessary. We are looking for a great idea and a strong creative vision—not previous experience painting on a large scale.

Artists working in illustration, watercolor, mixed media, photography, digital art, graphic design, painting, and other creative disciplines are encouraged to submit a concept. While mural experience is not required, submitted artwork should have the potential to translate successfully to a large-scale wall installation. Consider how your concept, shapes, colors, composition, and details will read when enlarged and viewed from a distance.

The selected artist will be paired with an experienced mural artist who will help adapt the chosen artwork for the wall and bring the concept to life. You do not need to know how to turn your artwork into a mural on your own—that is part of the collaborative process.

What We’re Looking For

Submitted concepts should:

• Incorporate the existing umbrella as an intentional part of the artwork.
• Present an original and imaginative idea rather than simply using the umbrella as an object placed in front of a painted background.
• Translate well to the scale, shape, and visual demands of the wall.
• Be visually engaging and easy to appreciate from a distance.
• Consider how colors, shapes, details, and composition will work when enlarged.
• Consider the public-facing nature of the space.
• Use color, movement, pattern, storytelling, humor, illusion, or other creative approaches to make the umbrella part of the experience.
• Keep the walkway and surrounding area accessible and unobstructed.

Most importantly, think big and have fun with the idea. Your submission does not need to solve the technical challenges of creating a mural. We want to see your artistic vision. The selected artist will have the support of an experienced mural artist to help determine how best to translate that vision to the wall.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-generated artwork is not eligible for display.

All submitted mural designs must be the artist’s original work and concept. Artwork or imagery generated in whole or in part using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools is not eligible for consideration.

Artists may use standard digital tools for tasks such as scanning, photographing, resizing, color correction, compositing their own original artwork, or preparing their submission file. These tools may not be used to generate, substantially alter, or create visual elements of the proposed mural through generative AI.

By submitting a design, the artist confirms that the artwork is their original creation and complies with this policy.
